Assessment for Learning

Why do we assess students?

As teachers we are asked to create assessment to show data on student growth. However, as teachers we assess students every day through anecdotal notes, entrance or exit slips, body language, or verbal explanations. When teachers perform the later type of assessment, they are conducting assessment for learning. Terry Heick explains assessment for learning in more depth here.
