Assessment as Learning

We are asked to assess our students both formatively and summatively. In Assessing English Language Learners: Bridges to Educational Equity, the term assessment as learning is described by, “student’s self-awareness and involvement in their development and their progress in knowing, thinking, and communicating within the context of school,” (p.125). Assessment as learning is a low stake, minute-by-minute assessment where students understand their growth and teachers refine their lessons and practices. Calico Spanish hosted a langchat where educators discussed allowing student input in the assessment process. Below is the pros and cons of student choice in assessment that different educators highlighted through the langchat. Student involvement at each level of assessment (planning, implementing, and evaluating), fosters self-awareness in mastering learning goals. Even though the list below compares and contrasts the implementation step of the assessment process, I do believe student choice and involvement in assessment fosters independent, self-directed, life-long learners.
