How do schools work?

Many families move from their home country to the United States with their family in hopes of obtaining a better education for their children. However, the US school system may be drastically different from what the parent or child has preciously experienced. Some families who move to the US have never sent their children to a formal education setting. Therefore, it is important for the school as well as the family to be prepared with questions and answers for how school works. Many teachers and administrators who work within a school do not give a second thought for how the school day is run, specific school terminology, or the expectation of parent participation. On the contrary, many families may need assistance and patience when understanding how schools function. Transferwire explains the levels of schooling in the US here. Concordia University created a list of buzzwords often heard within schools that have external links to help explain the definition here. Finally, Dr. Christel Broady wrote a book explaining school experiences parents may encounter from entering the school to applying for free or reduced lunch.

Dr. Christel Broady has published this text as a way to assist both teachers and Spanish speaking families understand the ins and outs of US Schools. The book can be purchased here and would be a great resource for the ESOL teacher or Family Resource Coordinator.
