I have continually heard that the KPREP state test is moving towards computer based testing. Our students already complete the MAP test online and my district has already moved to bi-annual benchmark testing using an online platform. If this change is coming down the pipe, how can we prepare our ELL students? Diane Staehr Fenner assessed two consortia that have federal funding to create assessments under a universal design that is inclusive to all students. PARCC and SBAC have begun creating online assessments to test development in reading/language arts and mathematics. Then, Fenner provides the following list list that educators can follow to prepare ELL students for an online assessment:
- Teach the terms ELLs will need to know to navigate the platform.
- Devote time to practicing test items and navigating the test platform with ELLs.
- Make sure ELLs have access to keyboarding skills.
- Collaborate with content teachers and test specialists on use of accommodations.
- Make sure ELL parents and caregivers are aware of the test requirements and platform.
